Removal of a linear foreign body with a red rubber catheter
Step one is to locate the proximal attachement of the string and release it via an enterotomy. Then the proximal end of the string is tied to a 12-F or 18F red rubber catheter as can be seen in the video
Then the blunt end of the red rubber catheter is passed into the enterotomy site through the entire length of the intestinal tract and out through the anus. This pulls the string out of the gastrointestinal tract and releases the plication. It can be difficult to pass the tube through the small intestines, and this should be done gently in order to avoid trauma. This method eliminates the need for multiple enterotomies.
After removal of the foreign body a close examination of the mesenteric border should be made, to see if there is perforation. If multiple perforations occur, ressection and anastomosis is indicated.
